Our Early Learning & Care Level 5 programme is designed to equip learners with the knowledge, skills, and practical abilities needed to care for and educate children from birth to six years old. Whether working independently or as part of a team, learners will develop the ability to provide holistic care and enriching learning experiences across a variety of early learning and care settings.

This programme also supports learners in developing professionally within the early learning and care sector while providing a pathway into further and higher education opportunities.

Course Structure

Week 1: Access to Moodle platform with recorded lecture and tutor support via email.

Week 2: Live webinar covering module overview, blended learning structure, and assessment guidance.

Week 3: Live tutor support session via Microsoft Teams.

Week 4: Recorded lecture and directed reading activities.

Week 5: Interactive webinar reviewing course content and key concepts.

Week 6: Study support week with tutor Q&A and assessment guidance.

Learners will have continuous access to Moodle resources, recorded webinars, and course materials throughout the programme.

Modules

The following 6 modules are mandatory:

• Introduction to ELC and Child Safeguarding [PG25076]
• Holistic Care of Children in ELC
• Professional Practice
• Inclusive Education for Children in ELC
• Early Learning & Play
• Child Development

Entry Requirements

To enrol on this programme, applicants should have:

• An Ordinary Level Leaving Certificate or equivalent education/experience
• Basic computer literacy skills
• Access to a computer/laptop/tablet with internet access

If English is not your first language, you must demonstrate English proficiency equivalent to IELTS 5.5 or another recognised international English language qualification.

Continuous Assessment

Assessment is completed through continuous assessment with assignment submission deadlines throughout the programme.

Work Placement

Work placement is a mandatory component of the programme.

Learners must complete 150 hours of placement across two early learning and care settings:

• Minimum 50 hours with children aged 0 – 2.8 years
• Minimum 50 hours with children aged 2.8 – 6 years
• Remaining hours may be divided across both settings, with at least 30 hours completed in the second service

Garda Vetting

Garda Vetting is required for all learners before commencing placement.

Students who have lived outside Ireland for more than 6 months will also need to provide Police Clearance Certification for relevant international addresses.

Technical Requirements

You will need:

• A PC with Windows 8+ or Mac OSX 10.5+
• Internet connection (minimum 10mbps recommended)
• Latest version of Chrome, Firefox, Edge, or Safari
• Adobe Reader
• Word processing software such as MS Word or Google Docs
