Course Description
The Early Learning and Care Combined programme is designed to provide learners with a comprehensive foundation and advanced progression in early childhood education and care. This combined Level 5 and Level 6 programme equips students with the practical knowledge, professional competencies, and theoretical understanding required to work effectively with children from birth to six years in early learning and care settings.
Credit Value: 240 ECTS | Level: QQI Level 5 & 6 | Duration: 2 Stage Programme (36 Weeks Access Each Stage)
Learners will develop expertise across key areas including child development, early learning theory, inclusive education, curriculum and pedagogy, and professional practice, while also building communication, leadership, and reflective practice skills.
This programme also provides pathways into employment in early learning and care settings as well as progression into further and higher education.

Course Structure
The programme is delivered in two stages, with structured weekly learning combining recorded lectures, live webinars, tutor support, and study weeks.
Level 5 Stage
Week 1: Access to Moodle platform, recorded lecture, and one hour tutor support.
Week 2: Live webinar (2.5 hours) – programme overview, blended learning structure, and assessment guidance.
Week 3: One hour tutor support and forum engagement where applicable.
Week 4: Recorded lecture and directed reading.
Week 5: Live webinar (2.5 hours).
Week 6: Study week with one hour tutor support for Q&A and assessment support.
Level 6 Stage
Week 1: Access to Moodle platform, recorded lecture, and one hour tutor support.
Week 2: Live webinar (2.5 hours) – programme overview, blended learning structure, and assessment guidance.
Week 3: One hour tutor support and forum engagement where applicable.
Week 4: Recorded lecture and directed reading.
Week 5: Live webinar (2.5 hours).

This structure supports flexible blended learning while ensuring academic progression from Level 5 to Level 6.
Work Placement
Work placement is an integral part of the programme and is required as part of QQI professional award standards.
Learners must complete 150 hours of placement across early learning and care settings, including:
• Minimum 50 hours with children aged 0–2.8 years
• Minimum 50 hours with children aged 2.8–6 years
• Remaining hours split across both age groups, with at least 30 hours in a second service
Entry Requirements
Applicants should meet one of the following:
• Minimum Ordinary Level Leaving Certificate or equivalent qualification
• Relevant work experience in early learning and care or related field
• English proficiency equivalent to IELTS 5.5 or recognised equivalent
Applicants whose first language is not English must provide evidence of English language proficiency.
