Elderly Care Course – Care Skills & Care of the Older Person (QQI Level 5)
Credit Value: 20 ECTS | Level: QQI Level 5 | Duration: 16 Weeks
Our Elderly Care Course is designed to provide learners with essential knowledge and practical skills required to deliver high-quality care to older adults in a variety of healthcare settings. This flexible Level 5 programme equips students with the competencies needed to support the physical, emotional, and social needs of older people while working as part of a healthcare team.
Learners will develop expertise across key areas including care skills, care of the older person, communication, daily living support, and holistic care approaches, while also building empathy, professionalism, and practical caregiving skills.
This programme also provides a pathway into healthcare assistant roles in nursing homes, hospitals, and community care settings, as well as progression into further healthcare study.

Course Structure
This programme is delivered over 16 weeks through a flexible self-paced learning model.
Week 1: Access to online learning platform, recorded lectures, and introduction to course materials.
Week 2: Independent study of module content with tutor support via email where required.
Week 3: Recorded lectures and directed reading.
Week 4: Skills development activities and assignment preparation.
Week 5: Study week with tutor support for assessment guidance and Q&A.
This cycle continues across both modules throughout the 16-week duration.
Assessments / Exams
Assessment is continuous and includes a combination of assignments and skills demonstrations.
Learners must also complete 40 hours of work placement in a suitable healthcare setting such as a nursing home, hospital, or daycare centre.
Additional training such as patient manual handling and basic first aid may be required prior to placement.
Entry Requirements
Applicants should meet one of the following:
• Minimum Ordinary Level Leaving Certificate or equivalent qualification
• Relevant work or life experience in a care-related setting
• English proficiency equivalent to IELTS 5.5 or recognised equivalent
Applicants whose first language is not English must provide evidence of English language proficiency.
