Course Description

The  Nursing Studies programme is designed to provide learners with a strong foundation in healthcare practice, patient care, and nursing theory. This comprehensive Level 5 programme equips students with the practical knowledge, clinical understanding, and interpersonal skills required to pursue further study in nursing or begin a career in healthcare support roles.

Learners will develop expertise across key areas including anatomy and physiology, nursing theory and practice, patient care skills, communication, and workplace safety, while also building professional, ethical, and practical care competencies.

This programme also provides direct progression routes into nursing degree programmes in General Nursing, Psychiatric Nursing, Intellectual Disability Nursing, and Children’s Nursing, as well as employment opportunities in healthcare settings.

Course Structure

The programme is delivered over 40 weeks with structured weekly learning depending on study mode.

Week 1: Live webinar (2 hours) introducing module content, programme structure, and assessment criteria.

Week 2: Tutor support via email or online platform (1 hour), including forum engagement where applicable.

Week 3: Recorded lecture and directed reading.

Week 4: Live webinar (2 hours) focusing on core concepts and guided discussion.

Week 5: Study week with tutor support (1 hour) for Q&A and assessment guidance.

This cycle repeats across modules throughout the programme.

Assessments / Exams

This programme is assessed through continuous assessment.

Learners must also complete 160 hours of work experience in a suitable healthcare setting such as hospitals, nursing homes, or daycare centres.

Additional training such as patient manual handling and basic first aid may be required prior to placement.

Entry Requirements

Applicants should meet one of the following:

• Minimum Ordinary Level Leaving Certificate or equivalent qualification
• Relevant work or life experience in healthcare or related field
• English proficiency equivalent to IELTS 5.5 or recognised equivalent

Applicants whose first language is not English must provide evidence of English language proficiency.
