Aims
This QQI Level 5 & 6 Combined Special Needs Assistant Course is designed to meet the training needs of those working or volunteering as a Special Needs Assistant. The course aims to develop skills, knowledge, and understanding of the role of the Special Needs Assistant, and to promote good practice among those working in the school system.

The course covers child development and behaviour theories, activities to support physical, social, emotional, and intellectual development in children with disabilities, and the roles and responsibilities of a Special Needs Assistant. Learners will also explore Multi-Disciplinary Teams, the EPSEN Act, Irish legislation, professionalism in the SNA sector, and the primary and secondary school curriculum.

Entry Requirements

• Minimum age: 17 years
• Good standard of English
• At least 3 passes at Junior Certificate or equivalent for full-time employment in schools
• Applicants not already working in the area must indicate how they will obtain work experience

Assessment/Examinations
Continuous assessment

Work Experience
Students are required to complete 40 hours of work experience during the course if they are not already working in the area. Students must secure their own placement.
