Creative Writing -Get Started- Keep Going!

Course description

It’s often hard to begin writing, even if you really want to and it’s also hard to keep going, even
if you really want to! Finding time & space, building self-belief & writing habits, all need
practice and encouragement.

This course offers you strategies to get started and to keep going. In class, we will discuss the
techniques of writing and we’ll read samples of writing from famous authors – to see how they
do it – which will help stimulate ideas.

The tutor will give out information on writing each week with exercises which can be completed at home and emailed to the tutor in advance of the following week and the tutor will circulate everyone’s work by email before the class.

The class is very interactive and everyone will have the chance to give and receive feedback on participants writing. You will be encouraged to delve into memories, experience, imagination as your material & to
try out stories, memoir, descriptive pieces, etc.

There will also be a focus on tools of the trade: finding a voice, creating setting, characterization, creating a plot, dialogue and editing etc.

We will also look at the topic of getting published.

Course Day & Time: Monday evening 7.30 – 9.30pm

Course Format: In class with tutor. Maximum of 12 students.

Duration: 10 weeks

Tutor: Ross Campbell

Ross Campbell, BA in English literature has been tutoring creative writing classes to adults in
community schools for 8 years. He teaches leaving cert English. He has published many pieces
in newspapers and magazines and wrote a weekly column for local news for a couple of years.
He has written short stories and poetry some of which have been published in newspapers.
