Cinematography Level 5

Cinematography at Ballyfermot College is an intensive one-year programme designed to kick-start a career in the film industry. Specifically, this course helps students develop strong practical skills in camera operations, lighting, and digital editing. By working with high-end SONY digital cameras and experienced teachers, learners gain the exact technical knowledge needed to succeed on a professional film set.

Certification

Graduates of this programme receive a QQI Level 5 Certificate in Media Production. Additionally, this officially recognised qualification provides a direct route into advanced Level 6 film courses or higher education degrees.

Course Content

This highly practical course focuses heavily on the roles and functions of the camera. Students complete hands-on projects to build essential skills in lighting, digital editing, and scriptwriting. In addition, learners explore the art of traditional darkroom black and white portrait photography to enhance their visual framing abilities.

Requirements

Academic Requirements:

• Five O6/H7 grades in the Leaving Certificate / LCVP, or a Merit in the Leaving Certificate Applied.

• Alternatively, applicants can present a relevant QQI Level 4 certificate or equivalent.

• Standard academic entry requirements may be waived for mature applicants (21+).

Portfolio Requirements:
Applicants must attend a 20-minute interview and present an original portfolio of recent visual work. The portfolio should focus on quality rather than quantity, specifically including:

• A maximum of 20 photographs that clearly demonstrate skills in lighting, framing, composition, and sequence.

• While photography should be the main element, applicants may also include film clips, video work, and storyboards to support their application.
