Therapeutic Play Skills – QQI Level 6
Credit Value: 15 ECTS | Level: QQI Level 6 | Duration: 12 Weeks
Our Therapeutic Play Skills programme is designed to provide learners with the knowledge, skills, and competence required to use play as a therapeutic medium in early years and special needs settings. This Level 6 module focuses on supporting the holistic development of children while enhancing emotional literacy and addressing behavioural and mental health needs through structured therapeutic play approaches.
Learners will develop expertise across key areas including therapeutic play techniques, emotional development, child-centred interventions, behaviour support strategies, and multidisciplinary collaboration, while also building practical skills to plan and implement play-based therapeutic sessions.
This programme also provides valuable skills for those working in early childhood education, special needs support, and childcare environments.

Course Structure
This programme is delivered over 12 weeks through structured blended learning combining live webinars, recorded lectures, and practical learning activities.
Week 1: Access to Moodle platform, introductory lecture, and tutor support.
Week 2: Live webinar (theory overview, programme structure, and assessment guidance).
Week 3: Independent study with tutor support and directed reading.
Week 4: Recorded lecture and applied learning activities.
Week 5: Live webinar focusing on therapeutic play techniques and applications.
Week 6: Study week with tutor support and assessment preparation.
This cycle continues throughout the duration of the programme.
Assessments / Exams
Assessment is continuous and based on practical and theoretical components.
Learners are required to complete 30 hours of work placement in an appropriate early years or special needs setting.
Entry Requirements
Applicants must meet the following:
• Minimum age of 17 years
• Good standard of English language proficiency
If learners are using previously achieved modules toward a major award, these must have been completed within the last 5 years.

Garda Vetting
Garda Vetting is required under the National Vetting Bureau (Children and Vulnerable Persons) Acts 2012–2016.
Learners must complete vetting before commencing work placement.
