Course Description
The Certificate in Programming from the School of Informatics and Creative Arts is an introductory one-year part-time course which you can complete online. Students develop basic skills in programming, web development and databases. This online programming course provides students with the foundation skills to design and develop simple database driven web applications. These skills are highly sought after in business and IT sectors.
Course Content
- Web Development and Databases. In this module you will be introduced to creating visual content for client-side webpages, structuring your visual and text content on a webpage (HTML5 code) and styling a webpage (CSS code).
- Programming Principles. Not all code is written for the web. You will build on your introductory programming knowledge and become a competent and confident coder. Students completing this module will be capable of using a problem-solving approach to the design, build and testing of solutions to fundamental programming problems.
- Dynamic Web Development. The aim of this module is to create dynamic and interactive webpages – using client-side and server-side programming – that access a database. Students will build more complex websites, adding to their knowledge of JavaScript, HTML and CSS. In addition, they will learn about coding for server-side websites.
Course Delivery
Classes will normally run in fully online mode on Monday and Wednesday evenings from 6:00pm to 9.00pm over two semesters. Delivery will involve a blend of “live” synchronous classes supported by additional asynchronous contact hours (videos/practical tasks), to be completed within the same week but at a time of your choice.
