DT411 Programme Description The leisure industry is dynamic and fast-moving and the nature of career opportunities in the industry is changing and growing rapidly. This programme focuses on the broad leisure industry and includes supervised industrial placements, practical modules and integrated continuous assessment. Practical modules include assessment in First-Aid, Lifesaving and Fitness Instruction, while there is also a strong emphasis on business subjects including fi nancial management, marketing, property management, human resource management and business law. Successful graduates will be prepared for entry into the industry at management level in areas such as leisure centres, theme parks, aquatic centres, golf clubs, tennis clubs, hotel leisure centres and other recreation-related developments. Within the practical modules students are assessed for recognised qualifi cations in First-Aid, Lifesaving and Fitness Instruction. Applicants should note that there is a strong emphasis on business subjects and on academic performance generally. Some examinations in second year take place in March after which each student must complete a fourmonth supervised placement in industry. This placement is remunerated and may be undertaken in Ireland or abroad. Career Opportunities The BA in Leisure Management offers graduates the opportunity to develop careers in a range of leisure, recreation, sport and cultural organisations. Graduates have developed careers as activity coordinators; consultants and project managers; event organisers; facility managers; personal trainers; sport and leisure development offi cers with local authorities, national governing bodies; and educational institutions. Graduates have also developed roles in sales and marketing, membership management, information technology and have progressed to general management and group management functions within leisure organisations.
