Course Description

Course Description:

The course is aimed at beginners and also those with some experience in drawing and painting, whether using dry media like pencils, charcoal, pastels or painting in oils, acrylics or watercolours.

Students who have personal art projects that they want to pursue  in class will be offered one-to-one assistance/tuition on how to progress their work. For students who want  more direct instruction each week we will cover a particular topic of painting and drawing with some in-class exercises that will give the student practice in that topic. A lot of time we will work from observation but there will be opportunity to explore more creative approaches to assist students to explore a wider range of possibilities.  Tutored topics we will  include : how to use the colour wheel, complimentary colours, light and shade, shading and colour tones, how to choose a colour palette, composing a painting, as well as approaches to handling drawing and painting materials, like mark-making, line, tone and texture.

NOTE TO ENQUIRERS ABOUT “WHAT TO BRING”:

For the first class students can bring along whatever paints and materials they may already be using, but students shouldn’t invest too much in new materials until they take some advice on what might be the most economical and effective (and limited) purchases to carry their exploration of painting forward. Sufficient materials will be available in class on the first evening.
