Question
I am interested in pursuing a career as a counsellor. Are there any tester courses I can do part time to see how I feel before committing to a full-time course?
Answer
"There are a number of colleges, both in the public and private sector that offer short-term/evening class courses in counselling skills or in more specialised areas like cognitive behaviour therapy. They run for a number of weeks for one evening a week and all course participants are awarded a certificate of attendance. The cost is usually around 100 euros. These courses are not accredited by any awarding council but they can be extremely rewarding on a personal level, and in your case, they will offer you the opportunity to experience some of the course content that a degree course would cover.

Contact The Life Long Learning Office of any Higher Education Institute to get their programme of studies on offer or alternatively contact some private course providers to see do they offer any short term counselling courses.

PCI College run an Intensive Foundation in Counselling and Psychotherapy on a part-time basis. This course runs for five months at various locations around the country. This course is the stepping stone for those who want to prepare for a professional qualification. It also may appeal to those who are looking for personal development or those who need counselling skills in their work. The aim of this course is to introduce you to a basic knowledge of counselling, its key skills and selected approaches to the process. "
