Course description
Do you already know the basics of knitting, but you’re not quite sure what to do next? If so, our intermediate knitting course is for you! During the 10 weeks of this course, we’ll be taking a look at one of the most iconic and enduringly popular knitting techniques – Aran-style knitting.
We’ll begin by learning how to do knitted cables, the distinctive twisted designs that are the building block of many of the more complicated Aran stitch patterns, and practice this technique in our first project, a simple knitted headband. After that, you’ll have a chance to learn a variety of Aran stitch designs, and then use a selection of these patterns to create a cushion cover or child’s jumper.
Along the way, you’ll learn about:
- The history of Aran knitting (and some of the myths that have grown up around it!)
- Reading knitting patterns – both written instructions and pattern charts
- Seaming, finishing, blocking and aftercare for your handknits.
Skills checklist – if you’re taking this course, I will assume you’re already confident in
- Casting on (long tail method)
- The two main stitches: knit and purl
- Casting off
Please Note: If there are any gaps in your knowledge in these areas, I’d recommend our Knitting for Beginners class on Tuesdays, 7 – 9 pm, instead.

I first learned to knit when I was six years old, and since then my knitting has taken me all
sorts of places – from selling my own handknitted pieces at craft markets to making Aran
sweaters for a Dublin-based fashion designer. I started teaching in 2018, and nothing
makes me happier than watching my students go from taking their first tentative stitches to
proudly holding up a successfully completed project.
So, why not see where your knitting journey takes you next? Join me for Knitting,
Intermediate Level at Malahide Community School… And in the meantime, visit me online
for pattern ideas, a browse in my yarn store and a peek at what my current students are
making!
