Knitting in the Round : Socks – Intermediate Class 

Course Description:

Do you already know the basics of knitting, but you’re not quite sure what to do next? If so, our intermediate knitting course is for you!

This term’s theme is socks, and if you’ve never experienced the snug cosiness of handknitted socks, you’re in for a treat! Together, we’ll work through your first pair of socks, using a classic pattern and thicker yarn to help familiarise you with the basic process. And if you’re new to the idea of knitting in the round entirely, don’t worry! I’ll have a simple additional starter project for you to ease you into it gently.

Then once you’re confident in the construction, we’ll explore how socks make a great canvas to experiment with new techniques in colour and texture, as well as simple ways to incorporate these flourishes into your second (or even third!) pair of socks.

The course will run for 10 weeks, and your fee includes the yarn required to make your first pair of socks. A kit list will be provided before we begin so you can make sure you have everything you’ll need in time for our first class.

Along the way, you’ll learn about:

• Knitting in the round, if this technique is new to you
• Basic knitted sock construction
• The tricky stuff – turning the heel and closing the toe
• A new, stretchier cast on
• Basic colourwork and cable textures
• Alternative tools and techniques for knitting small items in the round
• Finishing, blocking and aftercare for your handknits.

Skills checklist – if you’re taking this course, I will assume you’re already confident in:

• Casting on (long tail method)
• The two main stitches: knit and purl

Course Day & Time: Tuesday evening 6.45 – 8.45pm

I first learned to knit when I was six years old, and since then my knitting has taken me all sorts of places – from selling my own handknitted pieces at craft markets to making Aran sweaters for a Dublin-based fashion designer.
