Course Description

Gardening is a great hobby to keep you stay physically and mentally fit. This course is intended for beginners and gardeners who have some experience in the garden and want to expand their knowledge. The objectives of this course is to introduce participants to the world of gardening and learn how to complete tasks which are the foundation for successful gardening.

The classes will be mostly classroom based material with some practical elements involved, such as demonstrations of pruning and potting etc.

By the end of the course, participants will have a strong understanding of what makes a good gardner!

Course Outline:

  • Getting to know your garden
  • Planning for the seasons ahead
  • Right plant right place
  • Propagation methods
  • Nutrition / composts and watering
  • Pruning and deadheading
  • Pest and disease identification and control
  • Container Gardening

Class 1 How does your garden grow: Aspect, soil, drainage, shelter, seasonal interest
Class 2 Right plant right place: Plant ranges and their uses
Class 3 Plant propagation: Sowing seed & taking cuttings
Class 4 Caring for gardens: Nutrition, composting, irrigation, pruning
Class 5 Plant propagation: Division & layering and Grafting
Class 6 Problems: Pests, diseases & disorders
Class 7 Specials: Ponds, containers, raised beds & greenhouses
Class 8 Putting it all together: A look at some great examples

Course Day & Time:  Tuesday evening 7.30 -9.30pm

Start Date: 02/02/27 (Spring 2027)

Cost: €90

Course Format: In class with tutor

Duration: 8 weeks – Maximum of 12 students in class
