Sports Management and Coaching

Sports and Recreation Studies 5M5146

This one-year course aims to prepare students for work in the sports, coaching, recreation or leisure industries. Sports management and coaching graduates will gain the social, communication and leadership skills to work with individuals and groups in the growing sports coaching and health and fitness areas. Many of the skills acquired will be transferable for use in business or community development settings. The Sports Management and Coaching course will lay a foundation for these skills and provide the work experience to put learning into practice. In partnership with Meath GAA students can complete GAA coaching courses and obtain coaching badges. This programme is ideal for both school leavers and experienced, mature persons seeking a qualification in this area. It will allow graduates to apply for programmes in Ireland or abroad. By taking science modules, students can claim the science award and apply for Health Science in DCU.

CAREER OPPORTUNITIES

The new Sports Management and Coaching degree course in TUD Blanchardstown will offer graduates a local alternative to advance their studies to honours degree level. Graduates can also access honours sports programmes in TUD City Campus, Dundalk Institute of Technology, UCC, South EastTechnological University Carlow and Waterford, Munster Technological University Tralee, Atlantic Technological University Letterkenny or students can apply for scholarship programmes in Ireland or the US. Students can progress to PE Teaching via an undergraduate degree at Munster Technological University Tralee or Cork and to the Postgraduate Master in PE Teaching at UL. Sports graduates can apply to First Arts in Maynooth University where 175 places are reserved for QQI entrants. The course will give graduates the opportunity to become sports development officers or work in areas like gyms, leisure centres, or sports clubs. The general qualification will lead to careers in the rapidly expanding leisure industry. The level 5 qualification can also be used to apply for entry to certificate or degree courses in Sports, Business, Computers etc degrees in Universities or Technological Universities. Graduates of this course also have the option to pursue a QQI level 6 course in Sports or Leisure Management.

• Leaving Cert or LCA • Mature students of all backgrounds • Other equivalent qualification

All applicants may be interviewed regardless of previous qualifications.

All applicants will be asked to provide a letter of recommendation from a voluntary or professional sporting body.
