Longford College of Further Education
Longford College of Further Education (LCFE), located at the Templemichael campus in Longford town, operates under the Longford and Westmeath Education and Training Board (LWETB). The college provides a wide range of Post Leaving Certificate (PLC) and further education programmes tailored to recent school leavers, mature students, and adults returning to education. LCFE focuses on delivering practical, skills-based training designed to prepare learners for immediate entry into the workforce or for progression into higher education.
QQI-Accredited Courses and Tertiary Pathways
The college offers full-time PLC courses at QQI Level 5 and Level 6 across disciplines such as Nursing Studies, Healthcare Support, Business, Beauty Therapy, Software Development, and Engineering Technology. A notable recent addition to the curriculum is the Tertiary Degree Programme in Mental Health Nursing, delivered in partnership with the Technological University of the Shannon (TUS) and the National Tertiary Office (NTO). This innovative pathway allows students to commence their degree studies locally in Longford before transitioning to the TUS campus, entirely outside the traditional CAO points system. For other disciplines, graduates can utilise the Higher Education Links Scheme (HELS) to leverage their QQI awards for CAO entry into universities and technological universities nationwide.
For career changers and adult learners, LCFE provides a highly supportive environment with mandatory work placement modules that build real-world industry connections. In line with national further education policies, government tuition fees for PLC courses have been abolished, making these programmes highly accessible. While tuition is free, minor costs for specific course materials, uniforms, or professional kits may apply. Prospective students are encouraged to apply via the FETCH courses portal and should consult their local Intreo office or SUSI to confirm eligibility for financial supports such as the Vocational Training Opportunities Scheme (VTOS) or the Back to Education Allowance (BTEA).
