I want to go to Art College to study fashion design but I didn’t get enough points in my leaving certificate. I know I can do a PLC, but I am not sure how they work. Is there any in Westmeath?
Moate Business College run a National Certificate in Art and Design, FETAC, Level 5. This one year Art and Design course gives students an opportunity to develop and explore their creativity using different aspects of Art, Craft and Design. One of the prime objectives of this course is to assemble a portfolio of high quality work, which may afford the student entrance to a course in any art college within the EU. This course could be your platform to gain entry into any of the following Diploma & Degree courses in the following institutions: GMIT, Limerick School of Art & Design, NCAD, Sligo IT, Dun Laoghaire College of Art & Design, Grafton Academy of Design, Athlone IT and Waterford IT.
Sometimes these FETAC courses can fill up very quickly so it is advisable to make contact with the college as soon as possible. They will also support you, in your application to the Art College you wish to progress to. Some Higher Education Institutions reserve a quota of places on certain courses with limited places for FETAC students so you will not be competing with the standard applicants, only with other FETAC students. There are other colleges where you will compete alongside leaving cert students for your place. In the case of Art and Design courses, this entails your FETAC qualification being converted into points and these points are added to the points you are given for your portfolio. You should therefore use your year to ensure you build up a strong portfolio as gaining entry has become increasingly competitive. The portfolio is scored out of 600 with a minimum score of 240 required. Only those who are successful at this stage will be considered for places. You should make contact with the HEI of your choice to ascertain their criteria of entry for FETAC applicants.
