St Louis Community School in Kiltimagh, with its dedicated training salon, offers a range of hairdressing & beauty courses.
Courses lead to QQI level 5 in Beauty Therapy, and ITEC Level 2 diploma for beauty specialists,and at Level 6 the QQI Award in Beauty Therapy with the Level 2 certificate in bridal make up, Level 2 certificate in Thermal Auricular Therapy and Level 3 Award in Body massage are available.
Examples of the subjects covered in both the level 5 and level 6 courses are skin care, make up & eye treatments, manicure & pedicure, waxing, body massage, anatomy & physiology, tanning, nail technology, beauty science and customer service. Both courses are timetabled over 3 days each week.
In the hairdressing area, the Introduction to Hairdressing programme (QQI Level 5) which is timetabled over 3 days per week, includes hairdressing theory and practice, hairdressing science, safety and health and work, work experience, communications, reception and customer service. This is suitable for beginners and once completed offers the chance to progress to the DES qualification in Senior Trades (Hairdressing) and the City & Guilds Level 2 Diploma in Women’s Hairdressing, an internationally-recognised qualification.
This Professional Hairdressing course which runs over 1 day each week plus another half day every two weeks builds on the QQI Level 5 Introduction to Hairdressing programme but is also suitable for people with good experience in hairdressing but without hairdressing qualifications. The diploma/senior trades course covers salon reception, promotion and display of salon products and services, shampoo and conditioning services, plaiting and twisting, blow-drys, pin curls & upstyling, cutting, colour and lightening, and perming.
