Course description

This Primary and Post Primary Teaching Preparation course enables students to progress to degree programmes in:

  • Primary School Teaching – For learners who have achieved the minimum Leaving Certificate entry requirements for primary school teaching, but who did not achieve a H4 in Higher Level Irish. The learner will complete Leaving Certificate Higher Level Irish and will achieve the QQI Award in Childhood Education and Training 5M3635.
  • Post Primary School Teaching – For learners wishing to use the QQI Award in Childhood Education and Training 5M3635 to gain entry to a career in post primary teaching through a variety of educational progression routes (see Educational Progression)

This course also leads to direct employment opportunities within the Early Childhood Education and Training sector (see Employment Opportunities)

  • QQI Level 5 Certificate in Childhood Education and Training 5M3635Leaving Certificate Irish, Higher Level (optional)
  • Accredited Training in Lámh Sign Language Programme
  • Child Protection Training Occupational First Aid
  • Manual Handling
  • Duration: One Year Full-Time – September to May

Course Content

• Garda Vetting for Work experience

• Two Week stay in a Gaeltacht (Optional)

• Practical demonstrations and workshops in using early years equipment and materials

• Mindfulness in the classroom

• Maths based activities in the classroom

• Intensive study of curriculums for primary schools(Curaclam na Bunscoile), Montessori, Steiner and Froebel

• Workshops in Aistear (National Curriculum Framework)and Síolta (National Quality Framework)

• Educational outings

• Guest speakers

• Working in groups and managing group behaviour

Leaving Certificate or equivalent, LCA or relevant experience
