Course description

The Outdoor Education Instructor Training course is recognised as one of the leading courses of its kind in the country. Its coastal location offers a diverse range of outdoor venues within a short distance of the main campus, including the Bandon River, the Old Head of Kinsale, and Kinsale Harbour. Collectively, the course tutors have over twenty years of experience teaching on the course and almost forty years of experience in the outdoor industry. As one of the leading courses in the country, it recognizes the importance of using high quality equipment and strives to maintain the most modern, up to date resources.

The aim of this course is to provide participants with the opportunity to explore and develop new skills in the outdoor environment. The first year programme is specifically designed to build proficiency in all areas and to facilitate the personal development of each student. The strong emphasis on practical skills and work placement combined with individualized goal setting fosters a positive environment for success and enables each student to gain the skills and confidence necessary to become an Outdoor Education Instructor.

The second year of the programme is designed to strengthen proficiency in all areas, to teach specific instructional and coaching techniques, and to develop outdoor leadership skills. Successful participants gain FETAC Level 5 qualifications and have the opportunity to participate in a variety of Instructor Courses recoginised by the National Governing Bodies (NGBs) for each activity.

All participants are coached to develop his or her personal sailing skills from complete beginner to instructor level and beyond. Practical and theoretical sessions enable the student to obtain skills in basic and advanced boat handling, navigation, sea safety, weather forecasting and passage planning. The College is recognised by the Irish Sailing Association (ISA), the NGB for sailing and boating in Ireland.

The Kinsale College of Further Education is at the forefront of Windsurfing training in Ireland. It was one of the first colleges in the country to implement the new ISA “Get up and Go” windsurfing scheme. The course caters for both those who wish to develop personal proficiency and also those who wish to gain instructor qualifications.

Our Kayaking programme allows students to gain the experience and skills necessary to become Kayaking Instructors. The main focus of the programme is to develop moving water skills, advanced river running, rescue abilities and safty awareness. In addition to white water kayaking and open boat canoeing, Qualifications are issued by the Irish Canoe Union (ICU).

The focus of this course is to provide students with the opportunity to master the skills required to lead climb in some of Ireland’s top climbing locations. By the end of the course, the student will be able to teach people how to competently and safely climb the rock face at single pitch level. Qualifications are issued by the Mountaineering Council of Ireland (MCI).

The aim of this course is to develop students’ seamanship and knowledge in becoming proficient in handling rescue craft in all situations.
This qualification which is issued by the ISA is required for anyone working on the water.

Successful course participants will recieve qualifications that allow them to work in the outdoor industry as soon as they complete the course. There are a wide range of activity providers nationwide who have employed former students for the past twenty years.

Each National Governing Body (NGB) offer advanced instructor pathways. Our course provides the foundation needed in order to become an advanced instructor in any of the activity areas. Any student interested in advancing their skills will be assisted by course tutors in order to direct them towards the best pathway.

Many of our past pupils work in the rewarding field of youth development and for Youth Reach organisations, often running outdoor modules for the various programmes.

Many graduates from the course have started their own outdoor companies in various regions of the country. All participants who complete the course will have gained the qualifications needed to develop their own adventure-based business.

Adventure activities, especially the team building component, have opened doorways to a unique area of employment.
There are several Adventure Management and Team Building companies in Ireland that utilise the outdoors to enhance their programmes. Some of these companies have hand picked past pupils for this area of work.

Almost all of our NGB awards are transferable to most countries in the world.
Many pupils use their qualifications to travel and work in some of the most amazing and challenging locations around the globe.
