Have you always had an interest in make-up? Do you want to learn more about the application skills and techniques used by the top make-up artists around the world? Portobello Institute was the first college in Ireland to offer Make-up Artistry training in 1998 and has over 20 years experience training skilled and creative make-up artists. We offer you the most comprehensive make-up artistry course, taught by some of Ireland’s leading make-up artists within a purpose built make-up studio.
Our courses are fully inclusive of products and disposables with the make-up kit provided by Inglot, one of make-up’s leading brands. Nima Brushes are also included in the kits, these are designed by Niamh Martin, former programme manager of Portobello Institute’s make-up artistry courses. Niamh’s experience as a programme manager in Portobello, means she knows exactly the brush pack needed by students starting off and we are delighted to include it and the Inglot make-up kit for students at no additional cost. Students receive discount cards for use in Inglot.
Each day on this make-up artistry course is different with a strong focus on acquiring practical skills – this starts with a demonstration from our expert tutors followed by the opportunity to practise the chosen look with the support of expert help. Our class sizes are small, maximum of 14, so each student has the opportunity to gain one to one support for skills development from our tutors. In addition to this, each month we focus on a look that is trending on social media, students have a one to one tutorial with their tutor to practise this look, refine their skills and capture the finished look for their portfolio with professional photography. Students receive a digitial copy of their look that they can then use within their portfolio and for their social media feed, this is all included within the course fees.
As part of the Creative Hub at Portobello Institute, make-up artistry students have the opportunity to collaborate with fashion buying & merchandising students during their annual Irish Designer Showcase Event held in the Institute. There are also guest make-up artistseach semester with demonstrations on body art, fantasy make-up and festival make-up to look forward. We encourage students to broaden their horizons and invite them to participate on trips to some of the biggest shows and exhibitions taking place in Europe such as IMATS in London and Pret-a-Porter in Milan.
The Make Up Artistry course delivered by Portobello Institute, teaches the technical skill set required combined with the latest trends and application techniques, to give you the opportunity to work in the diverse and creative world of Make Up. Previous students have gone on to work with some of the biggest make-up artists in the world including Charlotte Tilbury, MAC, Inglot, and Pat McGrath to name but a few.
The qualifications awarded to succesful students are as follows;

Essential to becoming a make-up artist is exposure to creativity, make-up techniques that are trending and learning to collaborate with stylists, photographers and other professions who oftern work alongside the make-up artist. Portobello Institute has designed and integrated a number of additional activites to encourage and support the development of these additional skills in our students.
Fashion Event Showcasing Irish Designers
Each year, students of this programme collaborate together with the fashion buying students to create a showcase event for Irish designers. The purpose of this event is to give students the opportunity to work with designers and interpret their vision – this supports students to gain some understanding of working with designers in a fashion showcase such as a catwalk show.
Portobello Institute organises trips each year. These vary from attending in-store masterclass events with brands such as MAC and Inglot to traveling to some of the following major events in the make-up artists calendar;
Beauty Show, Dublin
London Fashion Week
IMATS in London
Pret-a-Porter, Milan, Italy
These vary year to year and are usually one day return trips and are booked with minimal cost for students. They are not included in the fees and are optional.
Once off guest lectures are organised throughout the calendar year to give students an opportunity to gain insight into either a particular style and technique, the career of an established and successful professional in the industry or an upcoming trend in make-up. These lecturers vary year to year but are always an interesting experience for our students.
