The cosmetic and film industry place high demands on makeup artists and Portobello Institute’s ITEC Certificate in Fashion & Photographic Make-up course provides you with the skills required for this exciting and challenging industry. This comprehensive yet creative part time course is specifically designed to equip you with the necessary tools to work in all areas of fashion and photographic makeup. Once completed, the employment opportunities can range in fashion – brands, catwalk, commercial and editorial, retail sales through to freelance bridal and special occasion makeup.
This course is fully inclusive of products with the make-up kit provided by Inglot, one of make-up’s leading brands. Nima Brushes are also included in the kits, these are designed by Niamh Martin, former programme manager of Portobello Institute’s make-up artistry courses. Niamh’s experience as a programme manager in Portobello, means she knows exactly the brush pack needed by students starting off and we are delighted to include it and the Inglot make-up kit for students at no additional cost. Students receive discount cards for use in Inglot.
As part of the Creative Hub at Portobello Institute, part-time make-up artistry students have the opportunity to attend the guest make-up artists each semester with demonstrations on body art, fantasy make-up and festival make-up to look forward. These guest lectures are usualy held during the day and attendance is optional for part-time students. We encourage students to broaden their horizons and invite them to participate on trips to some of the biggest shows and exhibitions taking place in Europe such as IMATS in London and Pret-a-Porter in Milan.
The Make Up Artistry course delivered by Portobello Institute, teaches the technical skill set required combined with the latest trends and application techniques, to give you the opportunity to work in the diverse and creative world of Make Up. Previous students have gone on to work with some of the biggest make-up artists in the world including Charlotte Tilbury, MAC, Inglot, and Pat McGrath to name but a few.

Entry is by direct application to Portobello Institute.
Essential to becoming a make-up artist is exposure to creativity, make-up techniques that are trending and learning to collaborate with stylists, photographers and other professions who oftern work alongside the make-up artist. Portobello Institute has designed and integrated a number of additional activites to encourage and support the development of these additional skills in our students.
Portobello Institute organises trips each year. These vary from attending in-store masterclass events with brands such as MAC and Inglot to traveling to some of the following major events in the make-up artists calendar;

IMATS in London
Pret-a-Porter, Milan, Italy
These vary year to year and are usually one day return trips and are booked with minimal cost for students. They are not included in the fees and are optional.
Once off guest lectures are organised throughout the calendar year to give students an opportunity to gain insight into either a particular style and technique, the career of an established and successful professional in the industry or an upcoming trend in make-up. These lecturers vary year to year but are always an interesting experience for our students. These lectures are held during the day and attendance is optional.
The focus of the content of this programme is to give students a comprehensive set of skills and knowledge to work as make-up artists. This programme covers client care, health and safety and working in the make-up industry. The primary modules relating to make-up are detailed below with modules on client care, health and safety and working in the make-up industry also covered during the programme ;
Apply Makeup – Unit 803. This is the foundation module of any Makeup Artistry course and is essential when trying to obtain work within the industry. The syllabus covers mood-board and face chart creation, client care and consultation, skin care to include cleanse, tone and moisturise, skin types and tones, characteristics and conditions, skin diseases and disorders, how to prep the skin for different types of makeup application, contour and highlight for each face, eye, lip and nose shape, lighting and colour theory and cosmetic science.
