Course description

A Level 8 honours degree programme for those who are analytical thinkers and who seek to plan, organise and implement the engineering and manufacture of high quality furniture and wood products with precision and efficiency. Using state-of-the-art digital technologies and manufacturing systems, the programme provides an in-depth knowledge of advanced furniture manufacturing techniques. Emphasis is placed on design-for-manufacture and creative and innovative approaches to producing high quality wood products.
Divided into workshop, laboratory and lecture-based learning elements; the workshop-based activity consists of a series of projects that demonstrate and use furniture manufacturing technologies. The learners develop skills and competencies in machining and assembly techniques, from basic or ‘traditional’ technologies to advanced computer-controlled (CNC). Lectures and laboratories support the workshop based activity and cover essential integrating elements. These projects and activities underpin an intensive block of work placement that can be undertaken in Ireland, UK, USA, Europe, Australia and other parts of the world.
Graduates are employed in various positions in the furniture and wood products manufacturing industries with duties including product engineering, project management, estimating, CAD/CAM, operations management, process engineering and improvementand wood products manufacturing. Graduates have career paths that take them anywhere from senior technical or management positions with their employers, to the establishment of the own businesses, for example in cabinetmaking, architecturalwoodworking, or indeed technology related services.
