Course description

A Level 8 honours degree programme for those who like to solve problems using creative techniques and who are interested in learning a range of skills to design and make innovative furniture.
There is a growing demand for furniture personnel who have a balanced mix of design and manufacturing skills. This programme produces confident, highly skilled knowledge workers with advanced skills in furniture design and development using high-end CAD/CAM systems, industrial design and prototyping techniques. Using these skills graduates design and evaluate furniture products with a strong emphasis on design formanufacture principles and sustainability. They identify and address crucial design and production issues which can be critical for the success of a furniture product.
Throughout the programme a number of challenging design and make projects are set and these underpin an intensive block of work placement that can be undertaken in Ireland, UK, USA, Europe, Australia and other parts of the world.
Graduates are employed in various positions in the furniture and wood products industries with duties including furniture design, product development, project management, estimating, CAD/CAM, interior architectural design, and wood products manufacturing. Many graduates have progressed to senior positions in industry while others have chosen the entrepreneurial option of building their skills and knowledge over time to go on to establish their own businesses, for example as highly proficientdesigner-makers.
