CAO CODE: GA785 In 2005, GMIT developed a new, four year, honours degree course, entitled BSc. in Medical Science, which replaced the Certificate in Medical Laboratory Science. This is the first four year honours degree in the area of Medical Science / Medical Laboratory Science in the country. This new course has been accredited by the Academy of Medical Laboratory Science. A 30-week hospital placement as a student medical scientist forms part of the course work. Medical Science is the study of the investigative laboratory procedures, techniques and instruments that are required for the diagnosis of clinical disease and the monitoring of therapy. Biomedical Science, Medical Laboratory Science and Medical Science are alternative terms for the same career. The graduate works as a medical scientist in a modern hospital and is involved in the investigation and diagnosis of medical conditions and diseases. In recent years there has been an increasing demand for medical laboratory diagnostic services and for the development of new services. This course will provide students with a solid foundation in the basic sciences together with the skills and knowledge to practice medical laboratory science.
