CAO CODE: GA673 As highlighted in the Framework for Sustainable Economic Renewal 2009-2014, the Government identified a set of actions to develop Ireland’s ‘Smart Economy’, which includes a ‘new green deal’ to move us away from fossil fuel-based energy production through investment in renewable energy and to promote the green enterprise sector and the creation of ‘green-collar’ jobs. These actions, coupled with the National Development Plan (2007 – 2013) budget allocation of €8.6 billion for energy, and ambitious targets for 2020 in the Government White Paper on Energy, all point to a long-term demand for Energy Engineers up to and beyond 2020 in Ireland. GMIT has invested approximately €1.65 million in energy systems which includes a dedicated undergraduate laboratory. These facilities will be used to enhance students understanding of the operation of conventional and renewable energy systems. GMIT provides the opportunity for students to undertake further postgraduate study through energy focused research Masters and PhDs, and through the development of a one year taught Masters in Environmental Systems.
