Course description
The BSc (Hons) in Sports Science and Physical Education awarded by London Metropolitan University (LMU) is one of the first such degrees in the UK. In Ireland the demand for skilled, highly trained graduates in this specialised area is at an all time high. Knowledge and understanding of Sports Science and Physical Education is developed through an integrated programme of lectures, tutorials, practicals and laboratory based sessions, and through the guided use of student centered learning activities such as problem solving exercises, case studies, directed reading and e-learning. The 1st year provides a solid foundation of knowledge and understanding in all disciplines of sports science including psychology, human physiology and anatomy with the addition of specific PE workshops and practicals. The focus of Year 2 is the application of knowledge and in particular the science behind effective teaching and learning in sport. The final Year 3 emphasis is placed on advanced and applied aspects of sports performance and physical education
Course Structure
This is a full time course delivered over 3 years. (This course can also be studied on a part time basis over 4 years)
Once students have completed year 1 they have the option to complete year 2 and 3 of Sports Science and Physical Education or change over to complete year 2 and 3 of Sports Therapy.
Entry Requirements
Entry to this course is by direct application. Acceptance to this course is interview based. Leaving Certificate students require 6 passes, 3 at Higher Level and a minimum C in Hons Biology.
Alternate entry route with the 1 of the following:
•Portobello Institute FETAC Level 5 in Sports Science and Coaching programme with 4 merits achieved in 4 subjects including Anatomy and Physiology. Portobello Institute student’s gain direct entry to year 1 and are exempt from interview process.
•or entry via interview from a similar programme with equivalent grades from alternate college
•Portobello Institute Sports Therapy programme with a credit achieved in Level 4 sports massage. Portobello Institute student’s gain direct entry to year 1 and are exempt from interview process.
•or entry via interview with ITEC level 4 sports massage programme with minimum of merit grade from alternate college
•Mature students are reviewed on a case by case basis and entry is via interview, preferable to have a grounding in science and a previous academic qualification. Please contact college to discuss your background.
