Duration: 3 years
Course Locations: Cork City

Course Details

Building Services Engineering involves the design of the mechanical and electrical systems that allow people to function within an enclosed structure. It requires the production and maintenance of an internal environment that is thermally stable and has the correct air quality and lighting levels. It requires the provision of all the necessary backup support systems such as power, hot and cold water and lifts; and the installation of life protection systems such as fire alarm and detection systems.

All of these must be linked to sophisticated building management systems to ensure effective control and to minimise energy consumption. Building Services Engineering includes the study of the thermal interaction between a person and the building envelope and between the building and the external environment. It is the design of low energy thermal, fluid and power systems to achieve a comfortable safe, internal environment whatever form and function the building may take.

Projects that require Building Services Engineers include manufacturing facilities and cleanrooms for the electronics, pharmaceutical and medical-device industries, industrial and commercial developments, shopping complexes, theatres, office blocks, leisure and sporting facilities, schools and colleges, public buildings. European directives require that all buildings receive an energy rating certificate', Building Services Engineers play a vital role in this process.

Second year builds on the engineering fundamentals developed in first year, enabling the students to apply the requisite skills and knowledge in the design of systems to control the building internal environment and design of systems to support the building function (Air Conditioning, Heating, Ventilation, Hot and Cold Water, Power, Lighting, Fire Alarm, Instrumentation).

Third year is aimed at extending the design skills from second year and integrating them with project management skills. The design of economic and sustainable services is also achieved through the consideration of energy efficiency and energy recovery systems.

The course is taught through the medium of formal lectures, tutorials, laboratory, practical and project work. A major services design project allows the students to demonstrate their design ability as well as their project management skills. Besides the main technological topics listed, the course also includes the topics of project management and legal affairs in relation to the organisation and control of building services projects.
