This course produces highly skilled graduates who combine their creative strengths with manufacturing technology in the design and making of innovative furniture products. The progression and focus of skill and knowledge builds through the course with traditional techniques evolving to computer aided design and manufacture, allowing graduates entry to the industry sector of most interest to them, i.e. from a craft based workshop to an industrial manufacturer. Keen attention is paid to intelligent design which addresses market, cost and manufacture and the ability of the graduate to produce high quality furniture product prototypes. What subjects will I study? Year 1 Communication and Learning Skills, Materials 1, Furniture Construction, Manufacturing Technology 1, Furniture Studies, Technical Drawing, Maths and Science 1, Projects 1. Year 2 Applied Graphics and Computer Applications, Management and Economics, Mathematics and Science 2, Manufacturing Technology 2, Industrial Design History, Design and Visual Studies, Materials 2, FDM Projects. Year 3 CAD/CAM, Quantitative Techniques, Marketing and Finance, Product Development, Materials and Standards, Design Studies, Design and Innovation 1, Commercial Projects. What career opportunities will I have? Graduates are equipped to secure positions within the furniture industry which range from small craft based workshops to medium scale industrial furniture manufacturing companies. Some graduates, after gaining industrial experience, establish their own businesses. Entry requirements The minimum entry requirements are: Pass (Grade D3 or better) in FIVE Leaving Certificate subjects including Mathematics and English or Irish with a minimum of 140 points. Applicants for this course should be interested in problem solving and manufacturing process techniques and should be comfortable with mathematics and analytical subjects generally. It would also be desirable to have studied one or more of the following subjects: Architectural Technology, Engineering, Art and Design and Communication Graphics.
