These days you have a massive choice when it comes to choosing a full-time music course. You can take music on its own, or select a joint honours course that includes drama, English, literature, education, history of art and other options. If you want to study music alone or music and drama then your choice will be pretty clear cut, but if you do want to broaden your horizons and study another subject as well then you have lots of options.

In terms of a music course itself, the schedule is usually pretty simple regardless of the institution that you choose to study at. The majority of courses are assessed via a combination of a practical examination and theory examination at the end of every year, as well as a degree of coursework that is handed in at various times of the course. Every year differs in terms of content, but the majority of them are extremely thorough and cover all aspects of music. This includes composition, performance, musicology and music technology, amongst other topics and subjects. However, the music courses will all cover the scientific aspects of music as well as the practical aspects. This usually includes basic computer literacy and a basic knowledge of how to use a music studio.
The great thing about the nature of music courses is that very few institutions have class sizes of over fifteen. Whilst this may make it harder to get onto a course, it also means that the teaching is far more comprehensive than it would be with a larger class size.
In terms of career options, most music courses facilitate any number of careers within the music industry. You could be a songwriter, studio manager, talent scout, promoter, and event organiser… and of course there are many more options. The majority of general courses last for two or three years, depending on the level they are at, but all of them are designed to give you a start in business.
