Whether a ‘newbie’ to the TEFL industry or an experienced TEFL globe trotter – the question always arises ‘Where is the best country to TEFL it?’ The answer is dependent on the type of person you are and what you value in life – is it to accumulate mass fortunes or live a simple unassuming life?

The jury is out when it comes to Korea. It is the most sought after ‘selection box’ of TEFL hotspots. It offers the best combination of a good paying job with additional perks. Those who have gone there and reluctantly returned say: ‘it is the friend with countless benefits!’

The quality of life is high in South Korea. Here you will encounter and befriend the most likeable people you will ever meet. Their calming nature and smiling faces are infectious. Their hospitality knows no ends! In ancient Chinese texts, Korea is referred to as ‘Rivers and Mountains Embroidered on Silk’. In the past many traders who travelled there were so charmed by Korea that they settled there. Some of their cuisine is even said to preserve youth and reduce wrinkles!

The demand for teachers is high which guarantees a good salary. How does 1.8 million Won sound? Forget the ‘Won’ part and your mind goes into overdrive with words like ‘I’m rich’. Houses and flights are paid for and taxes are low. Say ‘Anyeong Korea’ if this sounds like a destination for you!

If it is paradise you are after – say ‘Hola Mexico’. Many TEFLers consider it a reliable choice. It’s unique culture and extraordinary sites make it memorable. Mexico city is popular with tourists as an ancient Meso-American city and the site of many popular tourist attractions such as the Pyramid of the Sun and the Pyramid of the Moon. Mexican culture reflects the complexity of the country's history through the blending of indigenous cultures and the culture of Spain, imparted during Spain's 300-year colonization of Mexico. Mexican people are known for their kindness and hospitality. Descendants of the Aztecs and Mayas, they show great artistic skills as well as pride for their heritage. As part of Latin America, get use to two hour lunch breaks and siestas! Salaries are low but good enough for a good quality of life – which is guaranteed in Mexico.

Hard to believe for some but The Czech Republic has been voted as one of the top TEFL destinations and no - not just for the cheap beer. If the cheap beer doesn’t pull at your heart strings – the fabulous architecture will or the low cost simple living. The people are down to earth and welcoming. It is recommended to experience the authentic Czech Republic experience by trying out some of the smaller regions like Pilsen or Brno and get away from the country’s capital Prague. The good thing about Europe is that a trip to another country is a train journey away.

If our top three don’t hook you – try Thailand for its great weather all year round and the sandy beaches. Malaysia is a melting pot of religions and cultures. It is not a third world country so the cost of living will be higher than Thailand. Japan is a good option if you are into skiing and cultural activities. Be warned start-up costs can be high!

Choosing a country will depend on what you want to get out of teaching English. Where ever you choose to teach English, it is about immersing yourself in the culture – whether in a local watering hole drinking cheap beer or having a siesta in the sun. Remember sometimes a taste of paradise is priceless!
