The B.Sc. in Rural Development aims to enable participants to develop a broad-ranging knowledge of the theoretical field of rural development. It introduces participants to the rural development policy framework and trains participants in the planning and management of rural development activities, particularly in aspects such as community or area analysis, area planning and project management. The programme also aims to create awareness of the differential impacts of various rural development approaches and to introduce participants to a variety of strategies to combat social exclusion in rural areas. Extensive use of information technology is a key feature of programme delivery, including the use of the Blackboard online learning system. The programme is delivered through a combination of blended learning methods for home-based study, supplemented by inter-university seminars and group workshops. This programme is intended for people working in rural development in a voluntary or professional capacity, or those with a keen interest in a career in rural development.
