BASIC COURSE IN LEGAL STUDIES
This course will include a visit to the courts and will cover the following:
Week 1: Introduction to the Irish Court System: 1) Small Claims, 2) District Court, 3) Circuit Courts, 4) High Court, 5) Supreme Court . . . and 6) European Court of Human Rights. The differences between the Common Law and the Law of Equity.
Week 2: Personal Rights under The Irish Constitution. Negligence: Duty of Care, Standard of Care; Personal Injuries, Burden of Proof. Examples of Court Documents in Negligence and Personal Injuries Cases.
Week 3: Negligence: Duty of Care, Standard of Care; Personal Injuries, Burden of Proof. Examples of Court Documents in Negligence and Personal Injuries Cases. Pitfalls of taking a case re Costs.
Week 4: Statute of Limitations. Differences between Civil Law and Criminal Law. Murder, Assault.
Week 5: Sexual Offences, Rape, Sexual Assaults.
Week 6: Criminal Defences and the Rights of the Suspect under the Irish Constitution.
Week 7: Theft and Fraud Offences.
Week 8: Wills: What Constitutes a Valid Will. Case law outlining challenges made to wills.
Week 9: Squatters Rights: Adverse Possession.
Week 10: Occupiers Liability / Introduction to Contract Law.
We offer this Legal Studies course on Monday evenings at a cost of €110 for ten week term.
