App School, a five day course that teaches you everything you need to know to build and distribute iPhone apps.
So you might be asking - what is an iPhone app and why would I want to build one?
iPhone apps are the applications that are available on Apple's iPhone. Popular Irish apps include Encyclopedia, Extra! Extra! and Ireland's Phone Book. iPhone applications are published on Apple's iPhone App Store and can be downloaded by users for free, or you can choose to charge per download. More and more companies are building iPhone apps for their business, as they recognise them as a unique way to target and engage with customers.
With the right skills and training you can put together a professional iPhone application, either working as a freelance developer or employed on a permanent basis. App School is one course that teaches you everything you need to know to build and distribute iPhone apps. The courses run regularly in Dublin, with a course due to open in Cork later in the year. The course runs for 5 days and is taught by Daniel Heffernan—a leader in his field. The course normally costs €1,500 but there is a 50% discount for students and the unemployed, as the people who run the courses want to provide a cost-effective option for those looking to improve their CV and get back on the job market. There's more information available on the App School website. The course does require that you have basic object-oriented programming experience (such as C++, Java or C#).
John Long, who attended the first course says "I applied to App School with only a year of basic C# programming experience. Whilst some of the concepts involved in programming for the iPhone were new to me, with Daniel's help I was able to make sense of them. My week at App School gave me the knowledge I needed to begin working on my first app. Hopefully, the first of many!"
Past students at App School have been approached by companies looking to develop their iPhone apps, which demonstrates the huge market out there for people with specialist skills.
