AONTAS awarded on 40 years of service in Adult Education |
An extra 1,500 Post Leaving Certificate (PLC) places to be allocated to the VEC sector'- Seán Haughey TD
The Minister for Lifelong Learning, Seán Haughey, TD today launched the 40th Anniversary celebrations for AONTAS- The National Adult Learning Organisation and opened their AGM. The events took place at the Ballsbridge Court Hotel in Dublin 4.
The 40th anniversary celebrations were marked with a major retrospective on adult learning over the past four decades in Ireland and included a large visual display of archive material, photos and articles which track the development of the adult learning sector.
Speaking at the event, Minister Haughey said 'Today's occasion will give us all an opportunity to appreciate the huge progress that has been made over the last four decades in adult and further education.
Second-chance education is now very centred on the learner. Further Education has a major role to play in tackling the current unemployment difficulties.
To reflect this an extra 1,500 Post Leaving Certificate (PLC) places are to be allocated to the VEC sector shortly. This is a significant achievement in the current economic climate.
I have attended a huge range of events around the country over the last three years as Minister for Lifelong Learning and the enthusiasm of providers and learners everywhere is truly inspiring.
Aontas has played a pivotal role in the field of Adult and Community Education since its establishment in 1969 and will continue to do so into the future.
In addressing the challenges of this change, a prime objective has to be to encourage and support individuals to achieve their full personal potential, and to become active in the economy, in this increasingly technology driven age,’ said Minister Haughey.
Ireland has, as we are all too aware, experienced contrasting fortunes economically, socially and culturally over the last decade. But in this context there is a growing awareness that education can play an important role and, as a lifelong process, learning should occur at all stages.
We are all very grateful to the highly dedicated AONTAS staff for their tireless work on behalf of the Adult and Community education sector and your commitment and professionalism are truly outstanding', concluded Minister Haughey
