Course Aim
The FETAC Business Studies Course Level 5 is a two year broad business course that will enable students to demonstrate and apply a range of business skills and business knowledge in a variety of business contexts. Throughout this business studies course we aim to educate the student through a stimulating, broad range of business studies areas. Students will learn to interact efficiently in groups as well as developing autonomy in learning and taking responsibility for their work and the work of others. By choosing this business course you will be provided with a basic understanding of business theory and business concepts in a variety of business subject areas. We will provide students with an understanding of customer service; marketing and other general business studies areas in which to pursue careers.
Principal Areas of Study
FETAC Business Studies Course Level 5 – Stage 1
Communications
The business studies module is designed for delivery in a team working environment and to encourage learners to value their personal experiences and contributions in team working. Communications skills are highly valued in the workplace but this module extends beyond exclusively vocational needs, recognising that the acquisition of these skills is a life-long process, and central to personal, social and professional development and fulfilment.
Retail Administration
This business studies module provides the learner with an understanding of the retail organisation and has been developed to prepare learners fro the administrative functions involved in retail organisation. It provides for the development of the practical skills required to perform the necessary administrative duties. It is also intended to prepare the learner for further study in the related areas.
Retail Selling
This business studies module has been developed to prepare learners for employment in retail selling business situations. It can also prepare them for progression to further study or training in retail selling management or related disciplines.
Applied Economics
This business studies module is designed to provide the learner with a theoretical understanding and the practical knowledge of applied economics. The focus is on acquiring the knowledge and skills which enable the learner to apply economic thinking to current issues.

Customer Service
This business studies module has been developed to enable learners to deliver quality customer service in any industry:
Work Experience
This mandatory business studies module incorporates a choice of three modes of undertaking work experience in a business: Work placement, work practice and work based learning.
Marketing Practice
This module is designed to enable learners to learn and apply the principles and practices of marketing. Learners who complete this module will be able to work effectively as a marketing assistant in a range of organisations
Language ESOL
This module is a statement of the standards to be achieved to gain an FETAC credit in Language at Level 5. It is a mandatory module for the Level 5 Certificates in Business Studies and may be taken across a wide range of FETAC certificates as an elective or general studies module. It is intended that language skills be developed through broad vocationally related activities. The emphasis is on building the learners’ confidence through integrating the skills of listening, speaking, reading and writing.
Assessment
Students on the course undertake a: Combination of Skills Demonstration / Assignment / Exam Grading:
- Pass 50 - 64%
- Merit 65 - 79%
- Distinction 80 - 100%

Students who do not complete the full award will receive these component certificates for each individual certificate:
