For many of us when we think of FAS, we think of Apprenticeship training. But modern day FAS which is Irelands National Training and Employment Authority, is so much more. With a regional network of 66 offices and 20 training centres, FAS offers a whole range of services to jobseekers, employers and the community in general.

FÁS operates training and employment programmes, provides a recruitment service to jobseekers and employers, an advisory service for industry, and supports community-based enterprises. Some of the training options and job seeking services FAS offer are as follows:

Training Options

General Training Courses
FÁS runs a range of training courses suited to the needs of both jobseekers looking for employment, and employees wishing to improve their skills. Part-time, full-time, day and evening options are available in a variety of topics such as Hairdressing, Retail, Machine Tool Operating, Basic Keyboard Skills and numerous others. Traineeships
Traineeships are a mixture of classroom based learning in a FAS Training Centre and work place training in a host company. Available in a variety of occupations such as Dental Assistant, Childcare Worker and Legal Secretary – traineeships are an excellent way of gaining a FETAC qualification and practical experience at the same time.

Apprenticeships
FAS has statutory responsibility for all apprenticeship training in Ireland and offers training in a variety of trades such as Mechanic, Plumber and Cabinetmaking.
Apprenticeships generally last a minimum of 4 years, and consist of both on the job and classroom based learning. A qualified ‘Apprentice’ can expect to be placed on Level 6 of the National Framework of Qualifications.

Specific Training Programmes
FAS also offers a range of specific training courses geared at certain employment sectors, and groups in society. These include the Construction Skills Certification Scheme, Screen Training Ireland (for those seeking a career in the film industry), Courses for People with Disabilities, Women Returning to Work and many more.

eCollege
FAS runs an eCollege which offers distance learning and development opportunities through the Internet. eCollege courses are designed for those who wish to upgrade their skills or acquire new ones by studying at their own pace. The courses cover numerous topics, from web design to health and safety, and many courses have recognised certification.
