The course addresses the key areas of electrical energy systems; control systems; automation engineering; and the control of electrical machines and drives, together, with the relevant mathematics and industrial engineering and management. The programme produces graduates who possess a thorough knowledge of scientific principles, technical and personal skills that allow them to continue their professional development in their careers.

The aim of electrical engineering is to generate, distribute and apply electrical energy safely and economically and in a sustainable way for future generations to come. This includes the design of renewable generation distribution systems and combined heat and power systems for domestic, commercial, medical, leisure and industrial premises.

This syllabus is designed to prepare graduates for work in electrical power and automation systems within industry. The high academic standard of the course is complemented by a strong emphasis on applications and project work. The course concentrates on electrical energy systems including renewable energy systems, control systems engineering and mathematics and computing. There are also subjects on advanced plant automation, electrical machines and drives, and industrial engineering and management. A project is also undertaken and its principle objective is to develop the student’s ability to apply pertinent knowledge and skills to the solution of specific technical problems in the industrial environment using novel and innovative ideas and to document and present this information. There are free choice modules and in semester 8, the student can pick two modules from a suite of 7 modules. Course activity consists of formal lectures, practical work and projects. There is continuous assessment of practical work in addition to examinations.
