This course introduces the Student to the caring role of Hospital Assistant. It equips them with the skills and knowledge to care for patients in a safe and hygienic environment. Students learn the basic principles of infection control and are taught to apply standard precautions in relation to infection control. An understanding of the ageing process and how to provide individualised holistic care for the olderperson is also covered.
The course incorporates the understanding of the concepts of mental age and chronological age in order to be able to relate to people at a level appropriate to their needs. In addition, studentsare afforded the opportunity to further their personal development and enhance their communication skills.
ENTRY REQUIREMENTS: by direct application to the college. Acceptance to full time courses is interview-based. AWARDS: Portobello Institute Certificate in Hospital Care Skills. FETAC Level 5 Major Award, Certificate in Healthcare Support. PROGRESSION: Graduates from this course can progress to: Health & Social Studies, Letterkenny IT.
