Course Details

This programme is designed for people who wish to gain an understanding of principles and practice of Care Skills. The course is designed to equip the learner with the skills and knowledge to care for clients in a safe and hygienic environment. Students will learn how to: (1) understand issues affecting the lives of people in care, (2) use practical care skills, (3) manage hygiene and safety, and (4) develop diet and nutrition approaches. The course is ideal for all people who currently work within childcare, residential home care, or institutional care for adults.
This distance learning, FETAC accredited course means that Students can study flexibly at home, or at work, and can gain a nationally accredited Qualification.

Entry Requirements / Prerequisites

  • As this programme is delivered through distance learning, students must be capable of studying on their own initiative.
  • Applicants must currently be working in a Care setting (e.g. childcare, residential care, nursing home) as assignments will require learners to draw upon practical experience.
  • A basic working knowledge of computers and access to a computer with internet access is required to do the course.

Assessment

  • This course is assessed through completion of assignments and a skills demonstration, which must be observed and evaluated by a supervisor or manager.
  • As part of our quality assurance, student assessment work will be marked by an Internal Assessor, then checked by an Internal Verifier and an independent FETAC External Authenticator.

Transfer and Progression to Further Studies

  • This course leads to a Level 5 component award on the National Framework of Qualifications.
  • Students who successfully complete this programme may use this level 5 component certificate as credit towards a number of FETAC Major Awards including: Level 5 Childcare (DCHSC), Level 6 Supervision in Childcare (DCXXX) and Level 5 Certificate in Healthcare Support (DHSXX). Accreditation

  • Following successful completion you will receive a FETAC Level 5 component certificate in Care Provision and Practice (D20003) from FETAC.
  • The Further Education and Training Awards Council (FETAC) is the national awarding body for further education and training in Ireland. CMIT is registered with FETAC to offer programmes leading to FETAC awards in the National Framework of Qualifications in Ireland.
