The undergraduate programme leading to the degree in Medicine, has evolved from a traditional model of pre-clinical and clinical phases to a unitary model with greater integration; and from a six-year course to a foundation (from which some students may be exempted) plus five years.
In the initial years, the emphasis is on the basic and cognitive sciences which provide a basis for understanding modern health care. Clinical and communication skills and patient contact are introduced in the foundation year.
In the final three years of the programme the emphasis is on the acquisition of the knowledge, skills and attitudes necessary for professional practice. |
