Description
CAO Code AH003 The Course This four year BA programme (CAO Code AH003) enables students to achieve a competence in Theology and English Literature. At registration students may opt to take their degree either on a Theology Major basis with English literature as a subsiderary subject or on a Joint Major basis where they will have equal credits in Theology and their other chosen subjects. What is Theology? Theology is talk about the experience of God. Over four years, students study and dialogue with the Christian understanding of the experience of God as reflected historically in the Scriptures, Church teachings and the work of outstanding theologians. Courses in practical and moral theology consider the meaning of the Christian response in increasingly complex socio-historical contexts. Attention is also paid to Ecumenism and what Christianity can learn from other Faiths. Courses in Philosophy are taken in Year One and, in their second year, students participate in a field placement and reflect on their experience of e.g. teaching, youth work, prison work, communications, hospital visitation. This helps students integrate theology and life. Why Study English Literature? In studying English Literature, students examine the way in which poetry, drama, fiction have explored the human condition. This subject covers the period form the sixteenth century to the present day. In the final year, modern American, English and Irish Literature is studied. This course is recognised by the Irish Department of Education for teaching English at second level (Higher Diploma in Education required).
