Programme Description
As China emerges as a superpower in the world of
international trade, it is increasingly important for Ireland to
have home-grown graduates fl uent in Chinese and familiar
with Chinese culture and business. The honours degree in
Chinese & International Business will provide graduates with
the language and business skills either to work in China or
to work with organisations that do business with China. As
it is a conjoint programme between the Faculties of Applied
Arts and Business, 50% of the contact hours are devoted to
Mandarin Chinese and 50% to business subjects.
Students take up Chinese at beginner’s level and study it
intensively, spending eleven class hours per week learning
the Chinese language. This will enable them to achieve the
standard of language competence necessary to spend Year 3
in China and, on graduation, enable them to fi nd employment
in a variety of businesses using their language skills. The
opportunity to spend the third year of the programme in
China gives students the best possible opportunity to attain a
high level of fl uency in the language by placing them in a total
immersion situation.
Students also take the full range of business subjects which
gives them the skills and knowledge required to embark on a
career in international business.
Career Opportunities
In view of the increasing globalisation of world markets
and the commercial and trading importance of China it is
essential that students develop critical thinking, business skills
and linguistic skills. Students who successfully complete the programme will be equipped to play a key role in companies
and organisations seeking out new markets and/or expanding
within them. Graduates will be equally well suited to
the demands of all business organisations from small and
medium-sized enterprises to multinational concerns. This
undergraduate programme also provides an ideal foundation
for further studies or research. |
