Description

This course builds on “Beginning Art History” but does not require any previous study of the subject.

• The Great Cathedrals of the Middle Ages – Chartres, Notre Dame, Amiens – reaching to heaven with the gospels, miracles and stories in stone.

 

• The Italian Renaissance – a combination of genius and magnificence – popes and princes, power and wealth with Leonardo, Michelangelo, Mantegna and Raphael in the creation of immortal art and the rediscovery of Humanity.

 

• The Northern Renaissance – The Art of the Reformation – Van Eyck, Bosch, Holbein, Durer and Brueghel – very different, but the equals of the great artists in Italy.

 

• The Seventeenth Century in Europe – the age of some of the most important artists ever – Caravaggio, Lorraine, Vermeer, Poussin, Rembrandt, Velasquez, Rubens and Le Brun.

 

• The Impressionists – especially the seven who changed art forever – Manet, Monet, Cezanne, Renoir, Degas, Gauguin and Van Gogh.

 

• Women Artists through the Ages – since the 16th Century, every generation has produced women artists, including Anguissola, Gentilleschi, Fontana, Peeters, Leyster, Kaufman and Vigee-Lebrun. Impressionist and modern painters include Berthe Morisot, Mary Cassatt, Frida Kahlo and Grandma Moses.

 

• The Early Twentieth Century – looking at the legacy of the Impressionists, and the beginning of modern art with Picasso, Braque, Kandinsky and others.

 

• Abstract and Contemporary Art. The latter half of the twentieth century, including Pollock, Rothko and Warhol, and why Damien Hirst’s “Shark” or Tracy Emin’s “Unmade Bed” really are works of art.

 

As well as presentations by the tutor, a number of audio and video sources are used for particular subjects

during the course, including The Great Cathedrals and Modern Art.

 

We offer this course on Tuesday night 7.30 to 9.30pm at a cost of €110.
